Johnny Cottingham - DJ

Email : jumpingjohnny@jukinoldies.com

I was born and raised in High Point, NC. I now live in Archdale, NC. My wife of almost 53 years passed away in 2022 and we were blessed with 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. I am retired advertising manager for Belk and worked after that at the High Point Enterprise and Lowes Foods.

I have been collecting records since my early teen years and began my DJ Career in earnest at Thirsty’s in Greensboro, NC in 1994. Deejaying  in the Triad area led me to join the Association of Beach and Shag Club DJ’s and I began playing at the beach as well as locally. I became a member of Thirsty’s Wall of Fame in 2004 and The DJ Hall of Fame at Fat Harold’s in 2019.

I have been interested in music since the fifties when I received a guitar at about 8 years old. Unfortunately, my skills did not extend past wanting to play the guitar instead it changed to recording and collecting music. I was an early adopter of making 8 track tapes for my friends and transferring their collections of 45’s and albums to the new modern invention of eight-track tapes. That enhanced my collection of music and gave me a chance to record local bands. I saw early on that I was better served at collecting music instead of making music. This started my urge to buy the latest technology that was available and that I could afford. I remember paying more for a reel-to-reel recorder than I did for my first car. Of course, my first car was not the BMW of today, but it was German and it was a used VW. One of my early customers needed to transfer his collection of Johnny Mathis albums to 8-track and he wanted to sing along with Johnny Mathis and put that on 8-track and that was none other than my classmate, Kyle Beam. Kyle loved music as much as I did and we had similar likes and dislikes at the time, girls, music, girls, more music, and ways to make money. Being in high school in the sixties was a great time. Fast cars, mini-skirts, and the best music in the world.

I extended my desire to be around music even more when I got my Class C license to become a DJ at the local radio station in 1973. (That was something that was required back then). Over the years I have worked at stations WCSL, WLON, and WOHS. Of course, this was my side hustle because I needed a real job to support my growing family. I have worked primarily in the transportation business for most of my life. Working at Carolina Freight in Cherryville for about 10 years, and then later I moved on to FedEx Ground as a contractor in the linehaul division. I stayed with FedEx for 34 years and sold our business in 2020. I have owned several businesses over the past 50 years too many to list. Some successful and let’s say a few not so good. It does give a person diversity and that’s the Reader’s Digest version of my work history. I have been happily married to my high school sweetheart Barbara for 54 years. We have two wonderful children Deana and Steve and one grandson Michael who is a rising sophomore at NC State in mechanical engineering. I’m happy to join all the guys at Jukin Oldies and hopefully, I can be a good sub when needed.
